Wood adhesives FAQs

Can Polyurethane Wood Glue be used on non-porous surfaces?

EVO-STIK Polyurethane Wood Glue should only be used where at least one of the surfaces being bonded is porous. Non-porous surfaces should be abraded first to provide a good key for adhesion.

Can I use Wood Glue Interior outside?

No. EVO-STIK Wood Glue Interior is designed for indoor use only. For outdoor applications, use EVO-STIK Wood Glue Exterior, which is suitable for both interior and exterior use.

Why is Wood Glue Interior white when wet?

EVO-STIK Wood Glue Interior is white when wet because emulsions reflect light in this way. When used under the correct conditions, it dries clear or translucent.

How do I remove cured adhesive?

Cured adhesive can only be removed mechanically. Removal is easiest when the adhesive has just cured. To help avoid damage and reduce clean-up time, protect any vulnerable surfaces before application.

How do I clean the nozzle on Wood Glue Exterior?

To clean the nozzle on EVO-STIK Wood Glue Exterior, first close the bottle and wipe away any excess glue with a clean, damp cloth.

If the nozzle becomes blocked with dried glue, unscrew and remove the cap from the bottle. Twist the nozzle open and use a toothpick or similar item to push the dried glue back through the nozzle. Rinse the cap with warm water, allow it to dry, then screw it back onto the bottle.

What is PU Wood Glue?

EVO-STIK PU Wood Glue is a one-part, moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive designed for bonding wood and a wide range of other materials.

Its thixotropic, non-drip formulation makes it particularly suitable for vertical and overhead applications, including mortise and tenon joints. The high-strength adhesive offers excellent water resistance and cures rapidly, allowing bonded joints to be handled carefully after as little as 5 minutes in some applications.

EVO-STIK PU Wood Glue bonds most wood and many other rigid porous materials, including concrete, plaster and brick, as well as non-porous materials such as metals, foamed polystyrene, GRP and PVC. For successful bonding, at least one of the surfaces must be porous.

How long does Wood Glue Exterior take to dry?

EVO-STIK Wood Glue Exterior reaches full cure within 24 hours at 20°C.

The time required to develop full bond strength depends on factors such as temperature, humidity, bonding pressure, and the type, porosity and moisture content of the substrate. As a guide, beech substrates at 7°C should be clamped for at least 12 hours, whereas at 20°C and 55% relative humidity, clamping time may be reduced to just over 1 hour.

What is the open time for Wood Glue Interior?

The open assembly time for EVO-STIK Wood Glue Interior depends on the porosity of the surfaces being bonded and the ambient temperature. Typically, it is between 5 and 10 minutes.

Why do I need to clamp wood bonds?

Until the adhesive has set, it has little bond strength. As EVO-STIK Wood Glue Interior dries, water evaporates from the adhesive, which can cause slight shrinkage and may also swell the wood grain. Gently clamping the pieces together helps keep the bond in place and ensures good contact between the surfaces until the adhesive has set.
